Dear readers, lets begin.
This first part of my journey was about realizing that I really sold my house and got rid of almost all my possessions in the Netherlands. And getting used to the idea that I have to solve all my problems by myself. The first problem was that I had no experience with solo-sailing. I always sailed with lots of crew. I bought Boanerges with the idea that she should be my last boat which was fit for the great oceans. She should be manageable easy in heavy weather. Build dependable and her seagoing should be comfortable. When I left I had 7 years sailing experience with her on open waters. I had no doubt about the boat. But I was not sure about myself. Would I be able to sail 5 days continuously and stay all the time alert. And very important, could I cope with problems and at the same time keeping on sailing. I did not know. A short time after I left Amsterdam with 3 of my best sailing friends, the autopilot stopped working. A boat of the size of Boanerges is hard to sail without autopilot. And the water maker did not work well. And other things did not work to. I got heavily stressed. My friends stated" don't panic, we are here. Yes, but the future was that I should have to deal with it alone and sail Boanerges.
Everything worked out well after some time. Boanerges showed less and less problems, I got used to solo sailing and got creative in solving problems while being far away from places with a good service structure. In Cascais I was already prepared to cross the Atlantic Ocean. It was a dream to do that on my own since I sailed this ocean on a cargo/passengers ship from Amsterdam to Surinam during my civil service in the Dutch army begin 70's.
Enjoy the journey as we did.
